» History:
Despite several attempts by the Spaniards, Argentina did not become a secure colony until 1614 but by the end of the 18th century, Argentine born colonists became increasingly dissatisfied and impatient with Spanish rule. Argentina declared independence on July 9, 1816. Despite achieving independence the provinces were united in name only. Various presidents passed through Argentina improving the economy and infrastructure of the country. Then in the 1940s Juan Peron emerged as one of Argentina’s most revered and most despised president, and his wife Evita. Although they ruled by decree rather than consent, the Peron’s legitimized the trade unions, extended political rights to working class people, secured voting rights for women and made university education available to all. |
