![]() Who We Are: Stefan Anders (since 1994) and Petra Huber (since 1999) are living and working (Cafe Illampu, Hostal Las Piedras) in Sorata and know through our daily contacts and experiences with the local people about their needs and challenges. Since one year we can also count on the great support of our friend Amy O?Toole, who lives in La Paz. We use all the donations to support children and families in Sorata, with much success and many visible results. We are completely independent an there are no other institutions or organizations involved. We do not charge anything for our engagement in the community. Bureaucracy or other expenses are very little, so that the donations go fully to the people. Where is Sorata: This beautiful village is situated in a valley at the bottom of the snow capped mountains, Illampu and Ancohoma, about 170 km northeast of La Paz, on an altitude about 2700 meters above sea level. Its population is about 6000 people, half of them under the age of 20 years. Contact: If you want to help, for questions and ideas, contact us:
Projects: Medical help: We take care of ill neighbors. If necessary, we accompany them to hospital and pay the expenses. This project is getting another dimension with Amy in La Paz. She makes it possible that people from Sorata can see specialists in La Paz, stay meanwhile at her house and get all the support they need. With this we can also help in more complicated cases. School Supplies: At the beginning of school, we help children to get materials and school supplies. This is very important for families with a lot of children.Water Projects: 2001, the projects started to bring water from a closed river to Kincusirca, a part of Sorata, where a lot of families are still living without running water at their homes. Pipes were put in, a water tank installed at the river, and a well was built, where people can wash or bring their animals to drin need repairs, and a more solid water tank is needed because of problems with water pressure and heavy rains. Recently, a small community further up from Sorata, Viacha, asked for water pipes. They need about 1,500 meter tubes to bring water to the village. We raised money to purchase the pipes for the village. Environmental Education and Projects Around Rubbish: All the rubbish of Sorata is dumped at a really nice spot close to the river. We started with several action days of collecting garbage with children and neighbors. We cleaned the plaza, soccer field, cemetery etc... In 2005 we put garbage cans at the soccer field, in the plaza and on the streets. As well, we prepared information to distribute in the schools. Also the collection of recyclable materials (mainly PET bottles, aluminum and glass) got organized. The most difficult part about that now figures out to be the transport to La Paz because the plastic bottles have a big volume. Sorata is still seeking more rubbish bins.Trips for kids: Have a look at the website: www.mybirthdayforyou.com Once a year, we take about twenty five children on an excursion/trip during their school holidays. For example, we visited Copacabana and Isla del Sol, La Paz and the zoo, Tiwanaku and the hot springs and camped at Minascapa on the Camino de Oro. For the kids, this is the highlight of the year. But before we leave, they contribute for their participation by helping to clean up different places in Sorata. Back home, the children draw nice pictures about what they saw and like this, they say, "Thank you". This year, the trip is planned to Lagunas Chilata and Glacial. Many tourists go every year to visit these beautiful spots, and leave their rubbish behind. So as well, on this trip, one point will be to raise the kids' awareness about rubbish. Being up there, the goal is to clean up both places and send all the garbage down. Agriculture: The work on the steep fields is very hard. Tractors cannot be used. We are searching for more information about smaller agricultural machines to move the earth. The advice of specialists is requested and needed! Sponsorship of the Children: About 100 USD, or 100 Euros per year and child can help a lot. Clothing and shoes, medical help, hygienic products, school supplies, better nutrition, family care. The idea is to build up a relationship by writing letters. But of course you can also come and visit your child. |
